Appendix 5: Gargoyles on St Mary's Tower
When the tower was restored by Rattee and Kett in 1964 seven new gargoyles were needed to balance the one remaining ancient one above the entrance porch. The seven deadly sins were suggested but, in the event, seven mortals were chosen. Clockwise from the left of the porch they are: Mr C Bourne, the architect; Mr Ward, foreman in charge; Lawrence Fisher (?), former vicar; Mr Hardwick (?), technical adviser at Rattee and Kett; Mr J Sheldrick, bell-ringer for many years; Mr J Norris, treasurer of the restoration fund; Francis Hicks, vicar.
